Mondo Posters

The age of the hand drawn posters is long gone, yet there is one company which aims to rediscover and reinvent this fashion. Mondo, an offshoot of the Austin, Tex., theater chain Alamo Drafthouse, is commissioning artists to design alternative posters for films or tv series considered cult classics. They are active for many years now and they are getting bigger and bigger media coverage. Check out their archive, it's really worth spending some time with it especially if you are a movie fan, they have beautiful stuff.

Frankenstein's Army

Several years ago there was a Dutch nazi themed horror film in development titled Worst-Case-Scenario, it got a few nice trailers and even a good buzz on the internet, but unfortunately it was never realized. I slowly forgot about the whole project until I came across this little trailer:

This one is R Rated, so make sure to login before you click play:

This one is a little softer, but missing some cool scenes:

After watching it I noticed some familiar "creature" faces from the Worst-Case-Scenario trailers, I've checked the director, Richard Raaphorst and remembered his name because I emailed him back then about the movie and he replied, we exchanged a few emails, he was a nice guy. So finally he made his movie, I'm really happy for him, it took many years, but I'm sure it payed off. It's already out on dvd and blueray, you can check it out for yourself. Frankenstein's Army.

And here are the Worst-Case-Scenario trailers from many years ago, they still hold up and I'm sure you can see the similarities.

New minimal demo from ASD

The new demo from ASD was released at the Euskal Encounters party 2013, it's a very simple yet amazing looking little demo, check it out.

C64 Scene - Still Alive and Well

I didn't own a Commodore 64 when I was young, I've started my "digital career" on an IBM PS/2 back in around 1994. The C64 and Amiga machines always had that obscure but very personal vibe for me. Lately I bought my first Commodore because I always found it fascinating to work with limited options and resources. To create an image or an animation on it is like doing brain surgery with your hands tied behind your back. Sure it's doable, but you have to have a lot of creativity and patience. You think the C64 scene is dead? Think again, there are thousands of people still coding and working on Commodores, Amigas, ZX Spectrums - mostly in the demoscene though. Here are some examples, get ready to have your mind blown:

Here are some fresh examples from 2013:

The next one is maybe the most iconic PC Demo ever made, Second Reality from Future Crew, here is the original and below it the C64 conversion.

Cyriak - The Surrealism Continues

The first ever post on this blog was about Cyriak, and I've just realized, that there was no other posts about his works, though they are visually interesting as hell.

Here is the newest one from him, originally created for showtime, Cobwebs:

Next is an older one, but one of my favorites, evil teddy bears tear up beach, check it out:

And one more, a music video for Eskmo from 2010:

Interesting Music Videos

Here is a new music video from Morcheeba, which is a quite unusual one. It doesn't try to overwhelm you with it's cool animation or monumental story, it's just a plain and simple animated video with nice colors and esthetic typography, check it out:

The other video for today is an interactive visual experience for Ellie Goulding's track: Lights. The animation is computed real time on the monitor, you can even control it a bit with your mouse.

Dredd - Sequel Campaign

Last year's Dredd was a pleasant surprise, though the story was simple, the visuals, the atmosphere and the top notch action took the cake, it was the Dredd movie that the fans have been waiting for since the ungodly Stallone version. Unfortunately it flopped at the box office and at that time it seemed that it was the last Dredd movie for good.

Since then the film exploded on the home market and started to regain some of it's reputation, the fan base was growing and now they decided that they want to bring the rusty judge back to work.

If you feel the same way you are just a click away:

Gravity - Trailer - Update #2.

Gravity - Trailer

This year we got Europa Report earlier, we will get Elysium and Riddick later, and who knows maybe there are more surprises in the sci-fi genre coming this year, but Gravity looks like it's going to be one of the best ones, so this year the sci-fi fans can be greatful. I didn't forget about Oblivion, it's just really bad.

Here is the new trailer for the George Clooney and Sandra Bullock movie which is about astronauts orbiting around the earth and getting into trouble. The movie is directed by Alfonsó Cuarón who helmed Children of Men, which is one of my favorite movies. The trailer is just one long shot, but what a shot, make sure you sit down before you watch it:

New R rated Riddick trailer

It's opening september 6th in the USA, september 5th here in Hungary, I hope they will show it without dubbing because that just makes it impossible for me to sit trough a movie, hungarian dubbing is not like it's used to be 20-30 years ago... just a side note.

Anyway, for the third (if you don't count the animated short and the games) installment it looks like they made much more like the first one, Pitch Black, which for me was always the favorite one. The second movie was still great, but it was a bit detached for me, more shallow, but now we are in a closed environment again, which fact helps it make it feel more personal, claustrophobic, helpless - all good factors for a great horror film. This is the first R rated trailer from the new movie, I hope throughout august we will get some more of these, Riddick is bad ass, check it out and make sure to be logged into youtube, otherwise it won't let you watch it:

Grand Theft Auto 5.

Every episode of the GTA series was highly acclaimed by critics and praised by players. I remember playing the first two games when I was a teenager and it was so much fun roaming around freely in a city, doing whatever I wanted, even if only in 2D. Then the 3rd part came along and it was a blast, you felt like you're really living a different life. Since then expansions came out, then the 4th installment which was again great and highly detailed with many possibilities.

Now here we have a the 5th game in the series and it looks like it's going to be another blast with a huge world, interesting characters, side quests - a living, breathing sandbox paradise. Can't wait to play it.
